Alloy 5052
Green House Aluminum
76061259
5052 aluminum coil and aluminum sheet have good workability, high fatigue strength and good weldability.
It has very good corrosion resistance, especially in marine environments. 5052 aluminum can be anodized to improve the corrosion resistance of the material in corrosive environments.
This metal has excellent thermal conductivity and low density, like other aluminum alloys. To harden aluminum 5052, cold working can be used. Heat treatment cannot be used to obtain higher alloy strength.
Aluminum 5052 is a non-heat-treatable alloy where magnesium (Mg) is the primary alloying element. This gives it superior corrosion resistance, especially to salt water, and higher strength than the 1000 and 3000 series alloys.
| Element | Content (%) | Role in the Alloy |
|---|---|---|
| Aluminum (Al) | Balance (~95%) | Base metal. |
| Magnesium (Mg) | 2.2 - 2.8% | Primary alloying element. Significantly increases strength and work hardening capability. Improves corrosion resistance. |
| Chromium (Cr) | 0.15 - 0.35% | Helps control grain structure and improves toughness. |
| Iron (Fe) | ≤ 0.40% | Impurity. |
| Silicon (Si) | ≤ 0.25% | Impurity. |
| Manganese (Mn) | ≤ 0.10% | Impurity. |
| Copper (Cu) | ≤ 0.10% | Impurity (kept low to maintain corrosion resistance). |
| Zinc (Zn) | ≤ 0.10% | Impurity. |
| Others (Each) | ≤ 0.05% | - |
| Property | Value / Description | |
|---|---|---|
| Density | 2.68 g/cm³ (0.097 lb/in³) | |
| Melting Point | ~ 607 - 650 °C (1125 - 1200 °F) | |
| Thermal Conductivity | 138 W/m·K | Note: Lower than 3003. This is a key differentiator. |
| Electrical Conductivity | ~ 35% IACS | |
| Coefficient of Thermal Expansion | 23.8 µm/m·K (20-100°C) |
The temper defines the mechanical properties. 5052 is commonly supplied in H32 or H34 tempers for a good balance of strength and formability.
| Temper | Description | Tensile Strength (MPa) | Yield Strength (0.2% Offset, MPa) | Elongation (% in 50mm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| O (Annealed) | Soft, fully workable | 170 - 215 | 65+ | 19 - 25% |
| H32 | Strain-Hardened & Stabilized (1/4 Hard) | 230 - 280 | 195 | 7 - 14% |
| H34 | Strain-Hardened & Stabilized (1/2 Hard) | 250 - 300 | 215 | 6 - 10% |
| H36 | Strain-Hardened & Stabilized (3/4 Hard) | 270 - 315 | 240 | 4 - 8% |
| H38 | Strain-Hardened & Stabilized (Full Hard) | 290 - 345 | 255 | 4 - 6% |
Excellent Corrosion Resistance: Especially good in marine and industrial atmospheres. It is one of the most corrosion-resistant aluminum alloys, outperforming 3003.
Moderately High Strength: Significantly stronger than pure aluminum (1xxx series) and manganese-based alloys like 3003, while still being formable.
Good Weldability: It can be readily welded using common methods like MIG and TIG.
Excellent Fatigue Strength: Performs well under cyclic loading.
Good Anodizing Response: Takes well to surface treatments and paints.
Non-Heat-Treatable: Its strength is derived from work hardening (cold rolling), not from a heat-treatment process like the 6xxx series.
Because of its properties, 5052 coil is used where higher strength and corrosion resistance are needed.
Marine Applications: Boat hulls, decks, and marine components (where it's known as "marine-grade aluminum").
Sheet Metal Fabrication: Chassis, enclosures, and panels for electronic and electrical equipment.
Vehicle Bodies & Panels: For trucks, trailers, and fuel tanks.
Building & Architecture: Roofing, wall cladding, and architectural panels.
Home Appliances: Refrigerator liners, panels, and other components requiring a good painted surface.
Pressure Vessels: Where its combination of strength and corrosion resistance is beneficial.
| Property | Alloy 3003 | Alloy 5052 |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Alloy | Manganese (Mn) | Magnesium (Mg) |
| Strength | Moderate | Higher |
| Corrosion Resistance | Good | Excellent |
| Formability | Excellent | Good |
| Thermal Conductivity | High (155-170 W/m·K) | Moderate (138 W/m·K) |
| Typical Use Case | Rice Cookers, Heat Exchangers (where heat transfer is key) | Marine Parts, Vehicle Panels (where strength & corrosion resistance are key) |
Aluminum 5052 coil is the go-to choice when you need more strength and superior corrosion resistance than 3003 can provide, and where its slightly lower formability and thermal conductivity are not critical issues. Its excellent performance in harsh environments makes it a premier choice for marine, transportation, and architectural applications.

Aluminum 5052 as the strong, durable, and rust-resistant workhorse of aluminum alloys. It's chosen when an application needs more strength and corrosion resistance than standard alloys.
Here are its main applications:
Marine & Boats: Its excellent resistance to salt water makes it perfect for boat hulls, decks, and marine components. It's often called "marine-grade aluminum."
Vehicles & Transportation: Used for truck and trailer bodies, panels, and fuel tanks because it's lightweight yet strong and durable.
Electronics Casings: Found in the chassis and enclosures for electronic devices, as it's easy to form, strong, and shields well.
Building & Architecture: Used for roofing, wall panels, and architectural facades where a durable, weather-resistant, and paintable surface is needed.
Home Appliances: Used in refrigerator liners and other appliance parts where a good, paintable surface is important.

Here is a simple explanation of how Aluminum Coil 5052 is typically packed for shipping and storage.
The main goals are to prevent corrosion, physical damage (dents, scratches), and moisture.
Here’s how it's done, simply:
Inner Wrap: The coil is first wrapped in a strong, waterproof paper or plastic film (like VCI paper which fights rust) to protect the surface from moisture and scratches.
Sturdy Core: The coil is wound around a strong steel or wooden core to keep its shape and prevent it from collapsing.
Outer Protection:
For Standard Protection: The wrapped coil is covered with a heavy-gauge, waterproof plastic sheet and then tightly strapped with steel or plastic bands.
For Maximum Protection: The coil is placed inside a custom-made wooden crate or a sturdy wooden frame, making it safe for long-distance or rough transport.
Handling Ready: The final pack is clearly labeled and is designed to be easily lifted and moved by a forklift.
In short: It's wrapped in waterproof material, given a strong core, and often put in a wooden crate to ensure it arrives in perfect, rust-free condition.
